W3C WCL-XG

Known by the acronym WCL-XG, the group reviewed the industry proposal for a schema that can potentially be used by search engines and browsers to annotate search results using a method called Content Labels.

Segala’s involvement

Segala is proud to Sponsor the W3C’s first initiative to foster development of emerging Web-related technologies that complement current W3C recommendations. In fact, Segala was instrumental in the creation of the proposal and is co-author of the final report with ICRA and T-Online. The WCL-XG is now moving onto a full recommendation track and will be proposed as a replacement to PICS - the method currently used by Internet Explorer for filtering content.

W3C Web Accessibility Initiative

The Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) works with organizations around the world to develop strategies, guidelines, and resources to help make the Web accessible to people with disabilities.

Segala’s involvement

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)

The Web Content Accessibility (WCAG) Working Group is responsible for writing the accessibility specification that organisations and governments around the world use for measuring accessibility compliance. Sorcha Moore is an active participant in this working group.

Evaluations and Reporting Tools (ERT)

The Evaluations and Reporting Tools (ERT) Working Group is responsible for creating the Evaluation and Report Language (EARL) - which is a general-purpose language for expressing Web accessibility test results for. Web accessibility evaluation tools can use this language as a standard to express evaluations results in a platform independent format. David Rooks is a participant in this working group.

W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI)

The Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) was launched by the W3C with the aim of making access to the Web from mobile devices as simple and convenient as Web access from a desktop device.

Segala’s involvement

Segala is a Founding Sponsor of the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI). Paul Walsh, Segala’s CEO, is a member of the Steering Council and is helping to create and deliver new standards, best practice and guidelines worldwide.

Segala is named as a significant contributor to the Best Practice Working Group and is co-editor of the mobileOK conformance document with Google and the Internet Content Rating (ICRA)

Building Trust on the Web together

Mozilla refer to Glaxstar as a “premier Firefox extension developer”. Glaxstar have amongst their client portfolio such companies as PayPal, Yahoo, Del.ico.us and Voipster. In addition to developing software based upon Mozilla technologies they also undertake specialist web-developer work to “harden” Web sites to improve security against attacks.

Glaxstar maintains and operates Mozilla’s community marketing website www.spreadfirefox.com that has over 150,000 registered users. The site is a Drupal powered CMS incorporating blogs and RSS feeds. Glaxstar have added many bespoke facilities to the site to enhance its functionality over time.

About the Affiliation

Glaxstar and Segala are working closely in partnership to build a Segala Trust Firefox browser extension that highlight Web sites that contain the Segala Trustmark for accessibility.

Raising awareness of Content Labels

ICRA is an international, non-profit organization of Internet leaders working to develop a safer Internet. ICRA has long believed that self-regulation leads to the best balance between the free flow of digital content and protecting children from potentially harmful material.

About the Affiliation

Segala and the Internet Content Rating Association (ICRA) collaborate closely on raising awareness around Content Labels and the significant contribution they have on content classification and discovery.

Founded in 1984, BIMA is the longest standing trade association for the British interactive industry, supporting the interactive media sector as a whole, and the commercial development of its members.

Paul Walsh is Chair of the Executive Committee, stimulating commercial growth for members, creating and driving industry standards for the new media world and providing valuable tools and networks for members.
