5 things you probably didn’t know about Sorcha
I drive a “gold-colored†(or “yellaâ€, if you’re from Dublin) Yaris, christened “The Golden Bullet†by Aido….or “The Butter Box†as known by some people…who have then been thrown out of my car and told to walk…- I am terrified of sharks. Even in the sub-zero temperatures of Irish coastal waters, I am always paranoid about the possibility of shark attacks (apparently, we do have Basking sharks in Irish waters!). You might be laughing now, but no one thought that a whale would swim up the Thames…
- In spite of this fear, I am learning to surf (yes, David, that’s right, an Irish surfer…sorry, blue-with-cold Irish surfer!) Ireland has some of the best beaches in Europe for learning to surf. I’ve surfed in Lahinch, Inchydoney and Dingle.
Very, very, embarrassingly, (but curiously, somehow also a little bit proudly) I have piece of paper from April 2001 with Tim Berners-Lee’s (inventor of the internet for those of you non-nerdy enough not to know) autograph on it. Someone, who at the time knew I was doing webby stuff, met him at a conference and placed the request for me. And I have to admit, at the time I was extremely impressed. Just can’t quite bring myself to throw that piece of paper that’s been hanging around for the last 6 years out now…
I couldn’t possibly have written these 5 things without mentioning my dog, the therapy worker. Oh yes, the Segala guys have gotten great mileage out of this subject. I still have no idea why they find this just so hilarious. Jesse is part of the Peata group and visits people in the local Hospice. He has his own official high-vis jacket for walking around the wards and an official collar and lead. (Jesse’s expression: “it’s bad enough having to wear a stupid jacket; why do you have to publish a photo of me kitted out like this”)

I’m not saying that i wouldnt soil my wetsuit if one bobbed up beside me, but basking sharks are actually harmless. Its a couple of other species you have to watch out for… ;-P
I’ve stroked a nurse shark 80ft deep
ahem, didn’t you realise that your own work mates are in the know
Like a rabbit in headlights – he looks like he’s trying to run away from you! Poor man! Were the surrounding umbrellas to distract him in case he tried to run away? ;D
Here’s something to think about next time your surfing…
