Mobile Web

Worldwide, there are more digital mobile phones than televisions and PCs combined.

According to recent research, from Mobinet mobile communications study, April 2005, A.T. Kearney/University of Cambridge more than half of mobile handsets are less than a year old, with most having full Internet capabilities. In emerging markets where fixed line communications are scarce, analysts predict wireless will be the communication channel of choice.

Researchers at IDC say that 1.3 billion people will connect to the Internet via mobile phones by 2008. Can you afford to miss out on the market opportunity? Probably not because your competitors won’t.

About the W3C Mobile Web Initiative

The Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) was launched by the W3C with the aim of making access to the Web from mobile devices as simple and convenient as Web access from a desktop device.

The W3C’s MWI proposes to address mobile device web access issues through a concerted and co-ordinated effort of key players in the mobile industry, including authoring tool vendors, content providers, handset manufacturers, browser vendors, airtime suppliers, distribution partners and mobile operators.

How do you conform to the W3C mobileOK Trustmark?

mobileOK compliance will not be possible until the release of the relevant W3C standards in 2007.

How can Segala help?

Segala will provide consultancy services and conformance testing and certification as soon as the mobileOK specification is complete this year.

Segala is a Founding Sponsor of the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI), with our very own Paul Walsh sitting on the Steering Council. Segala is helping to create and deliver these new standards, best practice and guidelines worldwide.

Segala is a key contributor to the Best Practice Working Group and Co-editor of the mobileOK conformance document with Google and the Internet Content Rating Association (ICRA).

A single standard test approved by an international body provides the basis for providing conformance testing services to a recognised standard. Having a single internationally recognised mechanism for representing that standard will allow it to be universally detectable.

The mobile Web market does not at present have an assessment regime. By participating in the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) Segala will be strategically placed ahead of its competition in its understanding of the tests required and in its understanding of the certification implications following testing.
